Well baseball fans here we are at the end of July with a mere 58 games to go. We will do an around the horn and see what’s what as we buckle are seatbelts for the bumpy ride to October.
AL East
Toronto is once again defying the odds and looking to take another AL East championship, and if they do so it will be their 5th straight. Looking at their starting pitching, they have 2 great starters and then the depth falls off. That said the pitching is in the top 10 in the league in all aspects, to go along with an offence that is also in the top 10 in all aspects. The young team trying to chase them down is the Red Sox, railing by 5 games. While Boston’s offence has been pretty good, the overall team pitching story isn’t looking good. If they get to the post season, their fortunes could change as they have a power trio in Rocket, Martinez and Schillings.
AL Central
Chicago is running away having the best record in Baseball on track for a 115 win season, lead by a blistering offence that is top 5 in all categories. While not nearly as dominant as the hitters, the pitching staff has the 5th best ERA in the league holding opponents to a scant 3.78 runs a game. Minnesota now looks more like their only hope is to win the wild card race. Minnesota has one of the Best pitching staffs in the league, and has the 3rd best ERA out there allowing just 3.35 runs a game.
AL West
Seattle is putting up a ho hum season for them, but should be good enough to lock their 8th pennant in the last 10 seasons. Seattle success is mainly from the guys that swing the lumber, which is surprising as they have possibly the best starting 4 pitcher combination in the league. Their achilles heal is their bullpen, as outside of Assenmacher, it has played atrociously. California is once again in the hunt, but has been a listless ship since the owner Sara was put in a medically induced coma and hasn’t been around to help with the day to day operations of the team.
AL Wild Card
Currently Minnesota has the advantage here, holding a 3 game lead on Detroit, and a 4 game lead on Boston and California.
NL East
The Braves again have a stranglehold on the East, and are flirting with their 10th consecutive NL East Pennant. Again, Pitching and defense is the story of the day in Atlanta with the team leading the league in ERA once again, and the only team to have a sub 3 ERA, at 2.68. No other team is above 500, so highly unlikely anyone but the division leader will be going onto the post season.
NL Central
Here is the best division in baseball for drama, as 3 teams are vying for post season play, and they are currently the odds-on favorite to be sending two teams into the playoffs. Chicago is currently the top dog in the division out slugging their opponents. They are the number two scoring offence and are third in knocking the ball out of the park. A scant 1 game separates Houston and St. Louis. St. Louis is doing it with the 2nd best pitching staff and a top 10 offence. Houston seems to be swinging a little above their weight class, but they are undaunted and chasing their dreams for the postseason.
NL West
San Fran once again with a bloated payroll is running away with the division, crushing San Diego’s hopes of challenging them for the division lead. The Dodgers seem to have fallen off a cliff from last season and now look like a shell of the team that won 104 games last season. That said, with a rally the final couple months, they could easily get back to the Wild Card position.
NL Wild Card
St Loius is in the driver’s seat with Houston 1 back, SD 5 back and LA 7 back. Realistically it looks like it’ll come down to either the Cards or the Astros
