Monday 8/8/1994: Player of the Week honors go to Jackson and King
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Bo Jackson, Texas' starting designated hitter. Bo was on fire, hitting .360 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. Jeff King wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. King helped his team with an average of .500 and 15 RBI in 26 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. His season numbers are: .285 AVG, 115 hits, 31 doubles, 9 triples and 25 bombs, along with 78 RBI and 70 runs scored.
Thursday 8/4/1994: Frank Seminara (CIN) will miss full season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Frank Seminara experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 4th inning of the game against San Francisco, Seminara complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Cincinnati wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Seminara had suffered a Ruptured Disc Back. In 7 starts this year Frank struck out 33 batters in 35.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.28, his record 3-0.
Monday 8/1/1994: Stan Javier nabs six hits against Colorado
COLORADO - Stan Javier hits 'em where they ain't. Colorado certainly agrees as Atlanta's rightfielder unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 2 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 432 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Hit number 6 followed in the 9th inning, a triple. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 3rd (two RBIs) , in the 5th inning and in the 7th (one RBI). Stan scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .354. Atlanta scored 12 runs on 19 hits.
Monday 8/1/1994: San Diego's Stanley wins Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's shortstop Ken Dowell. He had an on base percentage of .435 and hit .409, while driving in 9 runs. Mike Stanley from San Diego wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .500, while driving in 12 runs.

It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Detroit's pitcher Jose Melendez. He started 5 games in July, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.30 in 41.2 innings. Jose fanned 24 hitters. Opposing players hit .272 against Jose this season. While posting an ERA of 4.33 he went 10-6 in 21 starts, fanning 76 and walking 16 hitters. Steve Shields pitched like a legend in July, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 7 games in July, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.47 in 57.2 innings. Steve fanned 60 hitters. Steve pitched THREE complete game shutouts! The American League's best player of the month was Chicago (A)'s Cecil Fielder, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Cecil pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .333 with 12 and 37 RBI while slugging .816. Fielder has hit 29 bombs this year while batting .329. He adds 19 doubles, along with 66 runs scored. He's 9th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! San Francisco's leftfielder Barry Bonds had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Barry was on fire, hitting .344 with 9 homeruns and 29 RBI. His season numbers are: .326 AVG, 126 hits, 21 doubles, 9 triples and 31 homeruns, along with 109 RBI and 89 runs scored. He's 7th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
