Monday 8/15/1994: Los Angeles (N)'s Buhner wins Player of the Week award
Boston's centerfielder Rickey Henderson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Rickey was on fire, hitting .536 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. This year Henderson drove in 70 and scored 87 runs while batting .322 with 17 homeruns. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Jay Buhner. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .500, while driving in 8 runs. Buhner has hit 12 bombs this year while batting .280. He adds 22 doubles, along with 63 runs scored.
Saturday 8/13/1994: Toronto's Witt severely injured
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Mike Witt will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against California where he left the field in the 5th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .324 against Mike this season. While posting an ERA of 5.86 he went 6-10 in 24 starts, fanning 128 and walking 33 hitters.
Friday 8/12/1994: San Diego's Tim Raines Sr. pounds five hits
NEW YORK (N) - Tim Raines Sr. hits 'em where they ain't. New York (N) certainly agrees as San Diego's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. A pitch from Doug Brocail in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 438 feet from home plate in right-center. That one tied it at 3 runs apiece. A pitch from Doug Brocail in the 5th inning left his bat for a RBI double. A double off Pete Young in the 8th inning accounted for his 4th hit. He collected a single in the 9th, driving in one run. Tim scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .292. San Diego scored 8 runs on 12 hits.
Friday 8/12/1994: San Diego's Castillo out for 6-7 weeks
SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's right-hander Frank Castillo will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (N) where he left the field in the 7th inning. Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Frank has a record of 5-8 this season, with an ERA of 5.88. In 131.2 Innings he was able to strike out 112 batters.

DETROIT - Detroit's catcher Chris Hoiles will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Fractured Wrist was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .349, Chris hit .267 and slugged .386. He has collected 61 runs batted in this year.
Thursday 8/11/1994: San Diego's Leiter out for 4-5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego is without its lefty Al Leiter for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Tim Naehring in a game against Colorado. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Spasms Back which will require surgery. Al has a record of 12-4 this season, with an ERA of 3.09. In 151.1 Innings he was able to strike out 98 batters. Al has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games.
Wednesday 8/10/1994: San Diego's Juan Gonzalez has great day with six hits
COLORADO - Juan Gonzalez hits 'em where they ain't. Colorado certainly agrees as San Diego's leftfielder unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit, off Greg Swindell in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. His 3rd hit was a double off Ray Soff in the 5th inning. A pitch from Scott Terry in the 9th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He had singles in the 3rd inning , in the 7th inning (one RBI) Juan did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 135 hits in 435 at bats, resulting in a .310 batting average. San Diego scored 12 runs on 20 hits.
Wednesday 8/10/1994: Colorado's Swindell out for 5 weeks
COLORADO - When it rains, it pours. Colorado's left-hander Greg Swindell will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Diego where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Swindell was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Tricep Muscle. This season Swindell compiled an ERA of 5.49, going 5-11 in 24 starts. He fanned 76 while giving up 172 hits in 137.2 innings.
Wednesday 8/10/1994: Texas has no chance in a 2-hitter by Tom Henke
SEATTLE - Tom Henke took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 348 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Henke (14-4) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 77 of 127 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Seattle was shortstop Luis A. Rivera, he finished 3 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, with three runs scored. Seattle improved its record to 74-39, scoring 10 runs on 16 hits.
