In 13 years of big league action so far, Pete M. has compiled a batting average of .280, along with 240 homeruns and 1021 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' With no outs in the 3rd inning, Pete M. drilled a two run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Monday 8/22/1994: Player of the Week honors go to Martinez and Piazza
The American League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's Tino Martinez, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. In 23 at bats he hit .522 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Mike Piazza from New York (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Piazza helped his team with an average of .458 and 11 RBI in 24 at bats.
Saturday 8/20/1994: Steve Ontiveros (HOU) will miss 7 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston is without its right-hander Steve Ontiveros for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mickey Morandini in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 3.46 helped him to a 4-3 record this year. He struck out 22 and walked 25 in 54.2 innings.
Saturday 8/20/1994: San Francisco's Gedman severely injured
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's catcher Rich Gedman suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from St. Louis' Morris Madden. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Gedman will probaby miss 7 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Cheekbone. While compiling an on base percentage of .342, Rich hit .284 and slugged .469. He has collected 81 runs batted in this year.
Friday 8/19/1994: Jeff Peterek NO-HITS Oakland
CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Jeff Peterek is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Oakland on no hits. Peterek (16-5) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 94 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' California's rightfielder David Justice finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, doubling once, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Peterek. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 8/17/1994: Houston's Hanson severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Erik Hanson suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 24 starts this year Erik struck out 68 batters in 143.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.69, his record 13-4. Erik has pitched one shutout and one complete game.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's Mark Brouhard suffered a serious injury Wednesday in a game against San Francisco. Brouhard fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4-5 weeks. Atlanta wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Brouhard had suffered a Torn Thigh Muscle. He has hit 12 homeruns while batting .293 this season. His 128 hits and 30 walks add up to a .341 on-base percentage.

Broken Wrist was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. He has hit 4 taters while batting .272 this season.
