Monday 4/25/1995: Olerud and Deer win Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Oakland's first baseman John Olerud. Olerud helped his team with an average of .500 and 7 RBI in 18 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .431, John hit .344 and slugged .689. He has collected 13 runs batted in this year. Rob Deer from San Francisco wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .750 and hit .647, while driving in 13 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games.
Saturday 4/23/1995: It's NO-NO time for Steve Shields against Florida
SAN FRANCISCO - Steve Shields had some fun again. REAL fun. Florida hitters did not. San Francisco's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 35 career shutouts in 432 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Shields (4-0) struck out an astounding 15 and walked none, throwing 88 of 134 pitches for strikes. Robby Thompson helped Shields at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 2 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 4 runs. San Francisco improved its record to 16-1, scoring 8 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 4/23/1995: Russ Davis knocks lights out with three homeruns
CALIFORNIA - Russ Davis powered Cleveland to a 14-5 win over California. He did it in style by homering three times. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 393 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. It tied the ballgame at 1. His 2nd shot, off Mike Jeffcoat in the 3rd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 3rd blast, a GRAND SLAM off Gary Wayne in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 395 feet from home plate. Overall he went 3 for 4, scoring three runs and driving in 7 runs. So far this season he is batting .206 with 4 homers and 16 RBI. Scott Lusader was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 4/17/1995.
Friday 4/22/1995: Kenny Rogers shuts out San Diego on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's left-hander Kenny Rogers is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Rogers 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. With no outs in the 8th inning John Jaha singled to break up the no-hitter. Rogers (2-0) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 100 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Alan Trammell provided Philadelphia with the offense Rogers needed as he collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, doubling once. Philadelphia improved its record to 10-6, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.
