Monday 5/16/1995: Sid Fernandez pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
MILWAUKEE - Sid Fernandez had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Minnesota's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 288 games started. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Fernandez (4-2) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 102 pitches. Jim Edmonds helped Fernandez at the plate, he finished 1 for 4, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 5/16/1995: Player of the Week honors go to Ventura and Deer
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Robin Ventura, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Robin went 10 for 17 (.588), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's rightfielder Rob Deer. Deer helped his team with an average of .435 and 11 RBI in 23 at bats.
Sunday 5/15/1995: Darryl Kile shuts out Cincinnati on 2 hits
CINCINNATI - St. Louis' right-hander Darryl Kile is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Kile (2-1) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 114 pitches. Felix Jose provided St. Louis with the offense Kile needed as he finished 3 for 5, blasting a homerun, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. St. Louis improved its record to 19-17, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 5/11/1995: Oakland's Andy Van Slyke hits for the cycle
TORONTO - Andy Van Slyke hits 'em where they ain't. Toronto certainly agrees as Oakland's leftfielder unloaded five hits and hitting for the cycle. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Gary Eave in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 412 feet from home plate. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a double. A single in the 4th off Gary Eave accounted for his 3rd hit. Hit number 4 followed in the 6th inning, a triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 8th off Randy Myers accounted for his 5th hit. Andy scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 8 hits in 18 at bats, resulting in a .444 batting average. He becomes the 83rd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 9/8/1994, Danny Tartabull was the last player to hit for the cycle.
