Tuesday 5/24/1995: Chicago (N)'s Hill out for 6 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s right-hander Ken Hill will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (N) where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Ken has a record of 0-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.19. In 12.1 Innings he was able to strike out 6 batters.
Tuesday 5/24/1995: Cleveland's Davis severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's shortstop Russ Davis hurt himself in the 9th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Russ Davis will miss at least 8-9 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Davis drove in 28 and scored 23 runs while batting .191 with 7 bombs.
Monday 5/23/1995: Hundley (CAL) and Nixon (STL) win P.O.W. award
Todd Hundley wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 27 at bats he hit .370 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. Todd managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Hundley has hit 10 longballs this year while batting .265. He adds 7 doubles, along with 28 runs scored. Otis Nixon from St. Louis wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Nixon helped his team with an average of .552 and 5 RBI in 29 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Otis is hitting .316 this year, with 50 hits in 158 at bats. He has driven in 14 runs, slugging .380.
Saturday 5/21/1995: Chico Walker collects 2000th hit against Colorado
COLORADO - Chico Walker got a standing ovation from 24663 fans in Colorado, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. With two outs in the 7th inning, Chico drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1994 where he hit .359 with 22 homeruns and 101 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
Saturday 5/21/1995: Dan Petry fires 1-hitter against Oakland
OAKLAND - Seattle's right-hander Dan Petry is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Petry 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 56th shutouts in his career. With no outs in the 6th inning Jose Valentin singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Petry (8-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. Jose Canseco helped Petry at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, and collecting 3 RBI. Seattle improved its record to 28-14, scoring 7 runs on 15 hits.
Friday 5/20/1995: Steve Shields blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
SAN FRANCISCO - Steve Shields took the mound and never left. And Pittsburgh hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 36 career shutouts in 437 games started. Shields (6-1) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 108 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Julio Franco helped Shields at the plate, he went 3 for 5, doubling once, and driving in 4 runs. San Francisco improved its record to 36-5, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits.
