MINNESOTA - Seattle's Kirby Puckett showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Minnesota on Tuesday. His hit in the 6th inning was a triple off Robb Nen. CHICAGO (N) - It was a great day for Chicago (N)'s lefty John Smiley. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Colorado on Monday. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Smiley (3-1) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 71 of 107 pitches for strikes. Sammy Sosa helped Smiley at the plate, he went 3 for 5, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, with FOUR runs scored and driving in 4 runs. Chicago (N) improved its record to 34-29, scoring 14 runs on 23 hits.

OAKLAND - Detroit's right-hander Kevin Tapani is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Oakland on no hits. The crowd of 23956 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Tapani (9-4) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 91 pitches. Eddie Zambrano provided Detroit with the offense Tapani needed as he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, going deep twice, hitting a double, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Matt Stairs this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .500 with 15 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 30 at bats. Matt managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. San Francisco's third baseman Matt D. Williams had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Williams helped his team with an average of .522 and 8 RBI in 23 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
