Monday 8/22/1995: Dean Palmer slams 3 HR
CINCINNATI - Dean Palmer was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Florida to a 10-5 win over Cincinnati by homering three times. A pitch from Paul Wagner in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 445 feet from home plate in left-center. A 422 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Tommy Greene in the 6th inning. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Turk Wendell in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. Dean finished 5 for 5, scoring FOUR runs and driving in 6 runs.
Monday 8/22/1995: Player of the Week honors go to Tapani and Gullickson
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's pitcher Kevin Tapani. Kevin went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 5 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Bill Gullickson, one of Cincinnati's best starting pitchers. Gullickson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56. Along the way he struck out 11 in 16 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 8/20/1995: Jose Rijo dominates New York (A), gives up just one hit
NEW YORK (A) - Baltimore's right-hander Jose Rijo is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Alex Ochoa singled with one out in the 7th inning. Rijo (10-6) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Mark Grace provided Baltimore with the offense Rijo needed as he finished 1 for 5, homering once, with 4 RBI. Baltimore improved its record to 55-68, scoring 9 runs on 11 hits.

TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Jeff Russell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Milwaukee on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Russell (12-9) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. Scott Fletcher provided Toronto with the offense Russell needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. Toronto improved its record to 68-55, scoring 9 runs on 10 hits.

SEATTLE - Seattle's first baseman Edgar Martinez was in good mood after the game against California, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 9th inning was a two run homerun off John Wetteland. His best year so far was 1994 where he hit .362 with 34 homeruns and 123 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Thursday 8/18/1995: Philadelphia's McCullers Sr. severely injured
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's right-hander Lance McCullers Sr. will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 6th inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 4.79 helped him to a 5-4 record this year. He struck out 33 and walked 18 in 56.1 innings.
