The American League Player of the Week award goes to Albert Belle, Minnesota's starting leftfielder. Albert went 10 for 25 (.400), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. Albert managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. His season numbers are: .286 AVG, 14 hits, 4 doubles, no triples and 4 longballs, along with 14 RBI and 8 runs scored. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's first baseman Will Clark. Will went 14 for 26 (.538), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 11 RBI.
Friday 4/15/1996: Huge blow for Boston's Thon, career over
BOSTON - Boston's Dickie Thon suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against Cleveland. Thon fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably entire career. Boston wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Thon had suffered a Torn Hamstring Muscle.
Thursday 4/14/1996: Bob Horner (ATL) will miss 10 weeks
ATLANTA - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Atlanta's first baseman Bob Horner will miss about 10 weeks after being hit by John Hope in the 3rd inning of the game between Atlanta and Florida. Horner was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Socket Eye.
Monday 4/11/1996: Cincinnati's Salmon wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Luis A. Rivera, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Luis A. was on fire, hitting .667 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Tim Salmon, Cincinnati's starting centerfielder. Tim was on fire, hitting .563 with 1 HR and 6 RBI.
Sunday 4/10/1996: Minnesota's Garrelts severely injured
MINNESOTA - When it rains, it pours. Minnesota's ace Scott Garrelts will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 5th inning. Minnesota wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Garrelts had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament.
Thursday 4/7/1996: California's David Justice slams five hits
SEATTLE - California's rightfielder David Justice accomplished a difficult feat in a 23-3 win over Seattle, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .267! His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Joe Roa in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 423 feet from home plate. A pitch from Dave Veres in the 5th inning left his bat for a RBI double. Number 5 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 442 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 4th inning . David scored 5 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 8 hits in 19 at bats, resulting in a .421 batting average. The final score of the game was 23-3.
Sunday 4/3/1996: Doug Drabek turns in great performance against Seattle
OAKLAND - Seattle's bats were sleeping, and Oakland's Doug Drabek gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Drabek (1-0) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 68 of 111 pitches for strikes. Corey Koskie helped Drabek at the plate, he got 1 hit in 4 AB. Oakland improved its record to 1-0, scoring 1 run on 4 hits.
