Monday 5/2/1996: Chicago (A)'s Bernie F. Williams mashes six hits
SEATTLE - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Seattle's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Monday. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd inning , in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 5th inning , in the 6th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Bernie F. scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 33 hits in 102 at bats, resulting in a .324 batting average. Chicago (A) improved its record to 15-11, scoring 23 runs on 23 hits.
Monday 5/2/1996: Minnesota's Belle wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Minnesota's Albert Belle, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Albert went 8 for 27 (.296), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 19 RBI. His season features a batting average of .287 (27 hits in 94 AB), 8 doubles, no triples and 11 bombs. Belle collected 33 RBI and 22 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Matt D. Sunday 5/1/1996: Steve Shields quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout
SAN FRANCISCO - Age doesn't matter. At least San Francisco's right-hander Steve Shields shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Pittsburgh, recording his 1st shutout of the season. With one out in the 6th inning Tim Spehr singled to break up the no-hitter. Shields (4-0) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 113 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Darrin Fletcher provided San Francisco with the offense Shields needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Sunday 5/1/1996: Toronto's Brown earns Pitcher of the Month award
Kevin Brown couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 5-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 42 innings of work he allowed just 16 hits while striking out 30, compiling an ERA of just 0.64. Kevin pitched a shutout as well. It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Philadelphia's pitcher Jim Abbott. He went 2-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.00. He struck out 11 in 15.2 innings. Jim pitched a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1996: Griffey Jr. (CAL) and Lavalliere (MON) win monthly award
California's centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .486 and hit .371, while driving in 27 runs. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Montreal's Mike Lavalliere this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .409 with 22 RBI and slugged .645 in 93 at bats.
Saturday 4/30/1996: Oakland's Pratt severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's catcher Todd Pratt will miss about 8 weeks after being knocked unconscious in a collision at home plate, in the 3rd inning of the game between Oakland and Texas. He was helped off the field after the incident. Pratt will miss at least 8 weeks. Oakland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Pratt had suffered a Dislocated Shoulder. Pratt has hit 2 longballs this year while batting .218. He adds 6 doubles, along with 10 runs scored.
Friday 4/29/1996: Albert Belle knocks lights out with three homeruns
MINNESOTA - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Minnesota's leftfielder Albert Belle accomplished that feat in a 8-2 win over Seattle. His 1st shot, off Esteban Loaiza in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd shot, a two-run homerun off Esteban Loaiza in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Johnny Guzman in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 418 feet from home plate in right-center. Albert went 3 for 4, with three runs scored with 6 RBI.
Monday 4/25/1996: Paul Gibson out for 5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's ace Paul Gibson suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 5 starts this year Paul struck out 29 batters in 32 innings of work. His ERA is 3.38, his record 1-2.
