Monday 5/9/1996: Steve Shields pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Age doesn't matter. At least San Francisco's right-hander Steve Shields shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against Houston, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Shields (5-0) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 70 of 121 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for San Francisco was leftfielder Mike D. Young, he went 1 for 4. San Francisco improved its record to 25-7, scoring 1 run on 3 hits.
Monday 5/9/1996: Atlanta's Whitaker wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Roberto Alomar this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Roberto was on fire, hitting .481 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Lou Whitaker, Atlanta's starting second baseman. Lou pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .560 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.160. Whitaker has walked 17 times this year and posts a .462 OBP. While batting .389, 44 for 113, he has driven in 25 runs. He's 2nd in the National League in batting, 10th in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
Saturday 5/7/1996: Atlanta's Lou Whitaker pounds five hits
ATLANTA - On Saturday, Atlanta's second baseman Lou Whitaker displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against San Diego, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A pitch from Al Leiter in the 2nd inning left his bat for a double. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Al Leiter. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Joel McKeon in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 401 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 6th and in the 8th inning . Lou did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .385. Atlanta scored 13 runs on 20 hits.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's leftfielder Luis E. Gonzalez hurt himself in the 3rd inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Luis E.
