Monday 5/23/1996: Cincinnati's Shawn Green gets the cycle
CINCINNATI - Shawn Green is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. In the 2nd inning he belted a double off Greg Maddux. A triple off Greg Maddux in the 6th inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 3 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 444 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. A single in the 12th off Jeff Heathcock accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Shawn did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 45 hits this season, accounting for a .263 batting average. He's now the 86th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Bernie F. Williams was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/13/1995.
Monday 5/23/1996: Jeff Montgomery out for 6-7 weeks
CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Jeff Montgomery will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 8th inning. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Montgomery had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. Jeff has a record of 2-2 this season, with an ERA of 0.86. In 21 Innings he was able to strike out 7 batters.

COLORADO - Lenny Dykstra hits 'em where they ain't. Colorado certainly agrees as Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 2nd hit, off Dave Righetti in the 3rd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Dave Righetti in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 449 feet from home plate in right-center. In the 7th inning he belted a RBI double off Tim Burke. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 6th . Lenny scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 57 hits in 169 at bats, resulting in a .337 batting average. The final score of the game was 24-9.

COLORADO - Colorado is without its southpaw Graeme Lloyd for at least 7-8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Orlando Miller in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Graeme struck out 13 batters in 24.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.92, his record 0-1.
Friday 5/20/1996: Florida's Sweeney severely injured
FLORIDA - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Florida's catcher Mike Sweeney will miss about 4 weeks after being hit by Mike Poehl in the 3rd inning of the game between Florida and Montreal. Sweeney was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Finger. He has hit 2 bombs while batting .225 this season. His 29 hits and 10 walks add up to a .296 on-base percentage.
