Wednesday 6/15/1996: Tony Ghelfi out for full season
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Tony Ghelfi experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 6th inning of the game against Toronto, Ghelfi complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Ghelfi had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. Tony has a record of 3-4 this season, with an ERA of 4.53. In 59.2 Innings he was able to strike out 57 batters.
Tuesday 6/14/1996: Pittsburgh's Citarella severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its right-hander Ralph Citarella for at least 7-8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to John Mabry in a game against Atlanta. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Citarella was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .331 against Ralph this season. While posting an ERA of 9.22 he went 1-9 in 15 starts, fanning 33 and walking 49 hitters.
Monday 6/13/1996: Player of the Week honors go to Russell and Grissom
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's pitcher Jeff Russell. Jeff went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 11 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .228 against Jeff this season. While posting an ERA of 1.76 he went 8-3 in 13 starts, fanning 60 and walking 20 hitters. He has 2 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 6th in wins! MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander John Burkett will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Oakland on Friday. Torn Back Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .228 against John this season. While posting an ERA of 4.67 he went 5-3 in 12 starts, fanning 28 and walking 21 hitters.
Thursday 6/9/1996: Rich Gedman (SFG) will miss 5-6 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's catcher Rich Gedman will miss about 5-6 weeks after being knocked unconscious in a collision at home plate, in the 6th inning of the game between San Francisco and Houston. He was helped off the field after the incident. Gedman will miss at least 5-6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Ulna. Gedman has hit for a .311 average this season. He has 21 extra base hits along with 101 total bases, resulting in a .490 slugging percentage.
