Thursday 6/23/1996: Ellis Burks parks three against Seattle
SEATTLE - Ellis Burks was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cleveland to a 12-5 win over Seattle by homering three times. His 1st shot, a three-run homerun off Eric Hetzel in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. A 369 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a three-run homerun off Dave Veres in the 7th inning. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 441 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Ellis finished 3 for 5, scoring three times and driving in 9 runs. In 4773 career at bats, he has hit 199 homeruns and collected 780 RBI.
Wednesday 6/22/1996: Kent Bottenfield turns in great performance against Los Angeles (N)
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Kent Bottenfield is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Bottenfield 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Bottenfield (5-6) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 114 pitches. Cincinnati's centerfielder Tim Salmon got 2 hits in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bottenfield. Cincinnati improved its record to 33-38, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Tuesday 6/21/1996: Colorado's Matsunaga severely injured
COLORADO - Atlanta's Mark Gardner drilled Colorado's rightfielder Hiromi Matsunaga in the 2nd inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Hiromi Matsunaga will miss at least 7-8 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Cheekbone which will require surgery. This year Matsunaga drove in 41 and scored 37 runs while batting .256 with 9 taters.
Monday 6/20/1996: Boston's Ramirez wins Player of the Week award
Manny Ramirez wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Manny was on fire, hitting .778 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. Manny managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Manny has gone 63 for 200 (.315) this season, hitting 8 bombs and driving in 37 runs. He has scored 39 runs on his own. Todd Helton from Colorado wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Todd went 12 for 18 (.667), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 4 RBI.
