MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander Mike Poehl will never forget this day. The 31-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against New York (N) on Friday. Poehl (11-5) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 98 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Montreal's shortstop Jeff Frye got 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Poehl. Montreal scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 7/21/1996: New York (N) has no chance in a 1-hitter by Brian Keyser
MONTREAL - Brian Keyser took the mound and never left. And New York (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Montreal's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 91 games started. Keyser (7-6) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Montreal's centerfielder Vladimir Guerrero went 3 for 5, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Keyser. Montreal improved its record to 56-39, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 7/20/1996: Troy Evers out for 5 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal is without its right-hander Troy Evers for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Tony Phillips in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. This season Evers compiled an ERA of 4.97, going 1-2 in 0 starts. He fanned 34 while giving up 50 hits in 41.2 innings.
Tuesday 7/19/1996: Toronto's Sanders out for full season
TORONTO - Toronto's rightfielder Reggie L. Sanders suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Hip. His season numbers are: .252 AVG, 83 hits, 17 doubles, 2 triples and 8 bombs, along with 46 RBI and 37 runs scored.
Monday 7/18/1996: Garrelts (MIN) and Clark (SFG) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Scott Garrelts, one of Minnesota's best starting pitchers. Scott went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 7 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 11 starts this year Scott struck out 42 batters in 90 innings of work. His ERA is 0.70, his record 8-1. Scott has pitched 4 shutouts and 6 complete games. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Will Clark, San Francisco's starting first baseman. Will was on fire, hitting .483 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Saturday 7/16/1996: San Francisco's Will Clark mashes five hits
COLORADO - Will Clark hits 'em where they ain't. Colorado certainly agrees as San Francisco's first baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Marty Bystrom in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 397 feet from home plate. A 425 foot drive to center field marked his 5th hit, a solo homerun off Brad Radke in the 7th inning. He had singles in the 2nd inning , in the 4th and in the 6th . Will scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 89 hits in 251 at bats, resulting in a .355 batting average. The final score of the game was 9-4.
Saturday 7/16/1996: Albert Belle on fire, crushes three
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's leftfielder Albert Belle flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 7-0 win over Cleveland. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Danny Jackson. His 2nd shot, off Danny Jackson in the 4th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 483 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Albert finished 3 for 3, scoring three runs and driving in 4 runs. His homerun total this year is 33, along with 93 RBI. On 6/23/1996, Ellis Burks was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. Minnesota scored 7 runs on 10 hits.
