Monday 8/8/1996: Canseco (BOS) and Guerrero (MON) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Jose Canseco, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Jose was on fire, hitting .370 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Vladimir Guerrero, Montreal's starting rightfielder. Vladimir pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .520 with 4 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.000. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.
Saturday 8/6/1996: Jeff Russell pitches 1-hit shutout against Texas
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Jeff Russell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Russell (12-4) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 61 of 104 pitches for strikes. Toronto's centerfielder Mitch Webster finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Russell. Toronto scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
Friday 8/5/1996: Cincinnati's Embree out for 6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's southpaw Alan Embree suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. Alan has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.65. In 17 Innings he was able to strike out 10 batters.
Tuesday 8/2/1996: Chicago (N)'s Sammy Sosa laces five hits
PHILADELPHIA - On Tuesday, Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Sammy Sosa displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Philadelphia, punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Mark Clark in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Mark Clark. He had singles in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Sammy did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .355. The final score of the game was 13-5.
Monday 8/1/1996: Strawberry and Gant win Player of the Week award
It's the 6th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's rightfielder Darryl Strawberry. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .389, while driving in 11 runs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Ron Gant, Chicago (N)'s starting second baseman. He had an on base percentage of .613 and hit .500, while driving in 11 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. He has hit 18 bombs while batting .205 this season. His 71 hits and 52 walks add up to a .308 on-base percentage.
Monday 8/1/1996: Garrelts (MIN) and Higuera (SFG) win monthly pitcher award
