Monday 8/15/1996: Hideo Nomo fires NO-NO against Florida
LOS ANGELES (N) - Hideo Nomo had some fun again. REAL fun. Florida hitters did not. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 92 games started. Nomo (8-9) was really unbelievable, striking out 17 and walking 4, throwing 83 of 127 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Lenny Dykstra stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring three runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nomo. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 8/15/1996: Stairs and Lankford win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Cleveland's Matt Stairs, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Matt pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .600 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.080. Stairs has hit 32 longballs this year while batting .290. He adds 15 doubles, along with 75 runs scored. Ray Lankford from San Francisco wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 22 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Ray has gone 124 for 398 (.312) this season, hitting 24 bombs and driving in 87 runs. He has scored 82 runs on his own.
Saturday 8/13/1996: Jeff Reed out for 4 weeks
MINNESOTA - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Minnesota's catcher Jeff Reed will miss about 4 weeks after being hit by Mike Mussina in the 2nd inning of the game between Minnesota and Detroit. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. Reed has hit for a .231 average this season. He has 11 extra base hits along with 60 total bases, resulting in a .355 slugging percentage.
Friday 8/12/1996: Ryne Sandberg ropes 2000th career hit
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s shortstop Ryne Sandberg was in good mood after the game against Cincinnati, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. In 15 years of big league action so far, Ryne has compiled a batting average of .253, along with 287 homeruns and 1097 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a single in the 4th off Keith Brown for number 2000.
Tuesday 8/9/1996: Brian Moehler (PIT) will miss 5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its right-hander Brian Moehler for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ed Taubensee in a game against Houston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Moehler had suffered a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .275 against Brian this season. While posting an ERA of 5.49 he went 4-15 in 28 starts, fanning 112 and walking 64 hitters.
Tuesday 8/9/1996: Hector Villanueva punishes Colorado with six hits
COLORADO - On Tuesday, Los Angeles (N)'s catcher Hector Villanueva displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Colorado, punishing their pitchers with six hits. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 449 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 4th hit, a GRAND SLAM off Graeme Lloyd in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in center field. In the 6th inning he belted a two-run double off Graeme Lloyd. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 3rd and in the 8th inning . Hector did drive in 9 while scoring 5 runs on his own. MINNESOTA - Minnesota's Mo Vaughn suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Baltimore. Vaughn fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 8 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Groin Muscle. Mo is hitting .257 this year, with 104 hits in 405 at bats. He has driven in 80 runs, slugging .506.
