Monday 8/22/1996: Jim Lindeman uncorks five hits against Colorado
COLORADO - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Jim Lindeman after his 5 hit game, which San Diego won 23-0 against Colorado. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Chan Ho Park in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Chan Ho Park in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 386 feet from home plate in left field. He collected singles in the 3rd , in the 5th inning and in the 9th inning (two RBIs). Jim did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .249.
Monday 8/22/1996: Kansas City's Offerman wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Kansas City's third baseman Jose Offerman. He had an on base percentage of .321 and hit .308, while driving in 11 runs. His season numbers are: .245 AVG, 94 hits, 20 doubles, 7 triples and 17 homeruns, along with 52 RBI and 60 runs scored. Fred Manrique from Florida wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .480 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.080 in 25 at bats. Manrique has hit 16 taters this year while batting .259. He adds 13 doubles, along with 47 runs scored.
Sunday 8/21/1996: San Francisco's Will Clark has great day with five hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Will Clark is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit, off Rene Arocha in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 395 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. He had singles in the 3rd inning , in the 5th and in the 8th inning . Will did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .351. San Francisco improved its record to 92-33, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 8/20/1996: Bob Wickman out for 8 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (A)'s right-hander Bob Wickman will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Detroit where he left the field in the 9th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .303 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 4.66 he went 0-4 in 0 starts, fanning 19 and walking 25 hitters.
