Thursday 9/1/1996: Brown (TOR) and Nomo (LAN) win monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Toronto's Kevin Brown. His record of 5-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 47.1 innings of work he allowed just 31 hits while striking out 35, compiling an ERA of just 0.95. Opposing players hit .173 against Kevin this season. While posting an ERA of 1.65 he went 19-3 in 29 starts, fanning 131 and walking 39 hitters. Kevin has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Hideo Nomo. He went 3-1 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 0.73. He struck out 45 in 37 innings. Hideo also fired a shutout. This season Nomo compiled an ERA of 3.36, going 9-10 in 27 starts. He fanned 186 while giving up 154 hits in 187.1 innings. Hideo has pitched one shutout and one complete game.

California's shortstop Chipper Jones had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Chipper pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .364 with 11 and 28 RBI while slugging .758. He has hit 39 taters while batting .309 this season. His 154 hits and 79 walks add up to a .415 on-base percentage. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Vladimir was on fire, hitting .418 with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI. His season numbers are: .348 AVG, 147 hits, 15 doubles, 2 triples and 21 taters, along with 70 RBI and 64 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Monday 8/29/1996: Player of the Week honors go to Greene and Leiter
The American League's best player of the week was California's Willie Greene, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 19 at bats he hit .632 with 2 HR and 4 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Diego's pitcher Al Leiter. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.10 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 8/27/1996: Mel Hall stars with 2000th career hit
ATLANTA - Atlanta's leftfielder Mel Hall was in good mood after the game against Montreal, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 6th inning was a single off John Franco. In 13 years of big league action so far, Mel has compiled a batting average of .303, along with 115 homeruns and 874 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.'
Friday 8/26/1996: John Smoltz blanks Cincinnati with a 2-hitter
CINCINNATI - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Smoltz 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 30th shutouts in his career. Smoltz (22-4) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 72 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Atlanta's first baseman Dave Valle finished 1 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smoltz. Atlanta scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
