Tuesday 9/6/1996: Texas' Giambi out for 6 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' season has taken a hit after one of their best players, third baseman Jason Giambi, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. Giambi was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Achilles Tendon. His season numbers are: .234 AVG, 110 hits, 20 doubles, 2 triples and 25 homeruns, along with 80 RBI and 73 runs scored.
Monday 9/5/1996: Luis Aquino pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Luis Aquino is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Aquino (15-7) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 67 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Rex Hudler provided San Diego with the offense Aquino needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. San Diego improved its record to 83-53, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 9/5/1996: Moyer and Piazza win Player of the Week award
Jamie Moyer of Detroit wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.54 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Jamie has a record of 18-4 this season, with an ERA of 3.23. In 214.2 Innings he was able to strike out 86 batters. He has 4 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in wins! The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Mike Piazza, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. BOSTON - Von Hayes got a standing ovation from 38962 fans in Boston, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Kevin Hagen. In 14 years of big league action so far, Von has compiled a batting average of .281, along with 118 homeruns and 956 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'

Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Toronto's Kevin Brown. His record of 5-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 47.1 innings of work he allowed just 31 hits while striking out 35, compiling an ERA of just 0.95. Opposing players hit .173 against Kevin this season. While posting an ERA of 1.65 he went 19-3 in 29 starts, fanning 131 and walking 39 hitters. Kevin has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Hideo Nomo. California's shortstop Chipper Jones had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Chipper pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .364 with 11 and 28 RBI while slugging .758. He has hit 39 taters while batting .309 this season. His 154 hits and 79 walks add up to a .415 on-base percentage. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Vladimir was on fire, hitting .418 with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI. His season numbers are: .348 AVG, 147 hits, 15 doubles, 2 triples and 21 taters, along with 70 RBI and 64 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
