CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its left-hander Danny Jackson for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Don Mattingly in a game against Seattle. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Jackson had suffered a Herniated Disc Back. Opposing players hit .337 against Danny this season. While posting an ERA of 6.10 he went 10-10 in 25 starts, fanning 95 and walking 55 hitters.
Monday 9/12/1996: Los Angeles (N)'s Neidlinger out for 7 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - When it rains, it pours. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Jim Neidlinger will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis where he left the field in the 1st inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Neidlinger was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .299 against Jim this season. While posting an ERA of 3.80 he went 7-10 in 24 starts, fanning 135 and walking 21 hitters.
Monday 9/12/1996: San Francisco's Gedman wins Player of the Week award
Boston's centerfielder Manny Ramirez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Manny went 8 for 18 (.444), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 15 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .414, Manny hit .324 and slugged .551. He has collected 100 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the American League in batting and 10th in RBI! San Francisco's catcher Rich Gedman had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 23 at bats he hit .522 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. His season numbers are: .322 AVG, 95 hits, 18 doubles, one triple and 13 bombs, along with 59 RBI and 40 runs scored.
Saturday 9/10/1996: Manny Ramirez pounds three dingers
SEATTLE - Boston's centerfielder Manny Ramirez flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 17-3 win over Seattle. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Todd Burns in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 431 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Todd Burns in the 6th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. In the 7th inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Bruce Ruffin. Manny finished 6 for 6, stroking a double, scoring FOUR times and collecting 8 RBI. Albert Belle was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/16/1996. Boston improved its record to 75-66, scoring 17 runs on 21 hits.
