Thursday 9/22/1996: Boston's Thome severely injured
BOSTON - Boston's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, second baseman Jim Thome, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Achilles Tendon which will require surgery. Thome has hit 43 homeruns this year while batting .296. He adds 29 doubles, along with 97 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
Wednesday 9/21/1996: Mark W. Davis out for 4 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is without its left-hander Mark W. Davis for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jeff Kent in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Davis was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Bicep Tendon. In 32 starts this year Mark W. struck out 232 batters in 207 innings of work. His ERA is 3.00, his record 16-5. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. He's 10th in the National League in wins!
Monday 9/19/1996: John Smoltz quiets San Francisco bats with shutout
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Francisco found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Smoltz 7th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 34th shutouts in his career. Smoltz (27-4) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 73 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Mike Devereaux provided Atlanta with the offense Smoltz needed as he stroked 3 hits in 3 AB, doubling once, scoring twice. Atlanta improved its record to 103-46, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 9/19/1996: Baltimore's Oliveras severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Francisco Oliveras suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Oliveras was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 3.53 helped him to a 16-9 record this year. He struck out 96 and walked 22 in 229.1 innings. He has 10 complete games and one shutout.
Monday 9/19/1996: Player of the Week honors go to Raines Sr. and Biggio
Baltimore's shortstop Tim Raines Sr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Tim was on fire, hitting .484 with 2 HR and 14 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Craig Biggio this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Craig went 14 for 29 (.483), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 8 RBI. Biggio has hit for a .251 average this season. He has 55 extra base hits along with 222 total bases, resulting in a .410 slugging percentage.
Saturday 9/17/1996: Baltimore's Mark Grace laces five hits
DETROIT - Mark Grace hits 'em where they ain't. Detroit certainly agrees as Baltimore's first baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Jose Melendez in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI double. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 319 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Rich DeLucia in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He collected singles in the 4th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th . Mark scored 4 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .281. Baltimore improved its record to 83-65, scoring 19 runs on 25 hits.

TEXAS - When it rains, it pours. Texas' right-hander Brad Brink will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 1st inning. Brink was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Brink compiled an ERA of 3.95, going 11-8 in 25 starts. He fanned 123 while giving up 179 hits in 159.2 innings. Brad has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.

CHICAGO (A) - New York (A)'s first baseman Joe Carter already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 5th off Charles Nagy for number 2000. In 11 years of big league action so far, Joe has compiled a batting average of .279, along with 254 homeruns and 1153 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
Friday 9/16/1996: Doug Drabek blanks Texas with a 1-hitter
TEXAS - Oakland's right-hander Doug Drabek is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Drabek (16-8) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 68 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' The hitting star for Oakland was shortstop Walt Weiss, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 12-0.
