Monday 10/3/1996: Dwight Gooden pitches 2-hit shutout against Texas
CHICAGO (A) - Dwight Gooden took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 432 games started. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Gooden (17-12) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 68 of 107 pitches for strikes. Barry Larkin provided Chicago (A) with the offense Gooden needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, homering twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 97-63, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 10/3/1996: Sheffield (TOR) and Puckett (FLA) win P.O.W. award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's first baseman Gary Sheffield. He had an on base percentage of .526 and hit .500, while driving in 8 runs. Kirby Puckett wins his 8th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 16 at bats he hit .625 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. He struck out 23 in 36.2 innings. Opposing players hit .252 against Jeff D. this season. While posting an ERA of 3.38 he went 16-5 in 24 starts, fanning 85 and walking 77 hitters. Minnesota's John Smoltz had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. Williams has hit for a .301 average this season. He has 57 extra base hits along with 301 total bases, resulting in a .512 slugging percentage. Thursday 9/29/1996: Melido Perez out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Melido Perez suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Florida he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 4.30 helped him to a 6-4 record this year. He struck out 41 and walked 16 in 58.2 innings.

The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Lenny Harris, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Harris helped his team with an average of .387 and 11 RBI in 31 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Bernard Gilkey, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career.
