Monday 10/3/1996: Dwight Gooden pitches 2-hit shutout against Texas
CHICAGO (A) - Dwight Gooden took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 432 games started. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Gooden (17-12) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 68 of 107 pitches for strikes. Barry Larkin provided Chicago (A) with the offense Gooden needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, homering twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 97-63, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 10/3/1996: Sheffield (TOR) and Puckett (FLA) win P.O.W. award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's first baseman Gary Sheffield. He had an on base percentage of .526 and hit .500, while driving in 8 runs. Kirby Puckett wins his 8th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 16 at bats he hit .625 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! His season numbers are: .328 AVG, 193 hits, 53 doubles, 8 triples and 22 bombs, along with 95 RBI and 92 runs scored. He's 7th in the National League in batting!
Saturday 10/1/1996: Minnesota's Smoltz named Pitcher of the Month
Minnesota's Jeff D. Robinson had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 5-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.74. He struck out 23 in 36.2 innings. Opposing players hit .252 against Jeff D. this season. While posting an ERA of 3.38 he went 16-5 in 24 starts, fanning 85 and walking 77 hitters. Minnesota's John Smoltz had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 0.41 in 43.2 innings of work in which he struck out 34 hitters. His record in September is 5-1. His ERA of 1.75 helped him to a 27-5 record this year. Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .379 with 25 RBI and slugged .674 in 95 at bats. Williams has hit for a .301 average this season. He has 57 extra base hits along with 301 total bases, resulting in a .512 slugging percentage. The National League's best player of the month was Florida's Kirby Puckett, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. In 93 at bats he hit .430 with 7 HR and 29 RBI. He has hit 21 taters while batting .325 this season. His 190 hits and 47 walks add up to a .382 on-base percentage. He's 8th in the National League in batting!
Thursday 9/29/1996: Melido Perez out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Melido Perez suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Florida he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Ruptured Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 4.30 helped him to a 6-4 record this year. He struck out 41 and walked 16 in 58.2 innings.

The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Lenny Harris, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Harris helped his team with an average of .387 and 11 RBI in 31 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Bernard Gilkey, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .714 and hit .680, while driving in 7 runs. Gilkey has hit for a .284 average this season. He has 44 extra base hits along with 207 total bases, resulting in a .429 slugging percentage.
