Monday 4/18/1997: Sierra and Bonds win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Ruben Sierra this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Ruben went 11 for 23 (.478), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 13 RBI. Ruben managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Barry Bonds from San Francisco wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Barry was on fire, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. This year Bonds drove in 15 and scored 10 runs while batting .356 with 5 bombs. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Saturday 4/16/1997: Luis Aquino out for 5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's ace Luis Aquino will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 6th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week.
Monday 4/11/1997: Meulens (TEX) and Devereaux (TEX) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was Texas' Hensley Meulens, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Hensley pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.222. Mike Devereaux wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Mike pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .550 with 0 HR and 3 RBI while slugging 1.150.
Sunday 4/10/1997: Edgar Martinez clubs five hits in a game
HOUSTON - Cincinnati's third baseman Edgar Martinez once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Houston's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. In the 4th inning he belted a double off Mark Portugal. A pitch from Mark Portugal in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 382 feet from home plate in right field. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. A pitch from Mike Timlin in the 8th inning left his bat for a double. He collected singles in the 10th and in the 17th inning (two RBIs). Edgar scored one run, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .538. Cincinnati improved its record to 5-2, scoring 10 runs on 20 hits.
Sunday 4/10/1997: Don Robinson fires 2-hitter against Florida
FLORIDA - Age doesn't matter. At least Atlanta's right-hander Don Robinson shares this opinion. The 39 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Florida, recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Robinson (1-1) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 119 pitches. The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Mike Devereaux, he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, hitting THREE doubles, with 2 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 4-2, scoring 7 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 4/10/1997: Brady Anderson stars with cycle against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Oakland's centerfielder Brady Anderson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Milwaukee's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Sunday. A single in the 1st off John H. Doherty accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from John H. Doherty in the 3rd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A 427 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off John H. Doherty in the 5th inning. In the 6th inning he belted a double off Wilson Heredia. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Brady scored 5 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .192. He becomes the 88th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Matt D. Williams was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/26/1996.
Sunday 4/10/1997: Minnesota's Garrelts severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its ace Scott Garrelts for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Greg Vaughn in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Garrelts was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle.
Friday 4/8/1997: 5-hit performance by Texas' Derek Bell
TEXAS - Texas' rightfielder Derek Bell accomplished a difficult feat in a 12-4 win over Oakland, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .253! A pitch from Jim Gott in the 2nd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 379 feet from home plate in right field. In the 4th inning he belted a double off Jim Gott. A pitch from Colin Ward in the 8th inning left his bat for a RBI double. He had singles in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 6th . Derek did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .632. Texas improved its record to 5-1, scoring 12 runs on 21 hits.
Wednesday 4/6/1997: Brian Fisher pitches 1-hit shutout against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - With his best stuff going, Toronto's Brian Fisher overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Cleveland had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Fisher (1-0) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 63 of 95 pitches for strikes. Toronto's first baseman Gary Sheffield collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Fisher. Toronto improved its record to 3-0, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 4/4/1997: Cal Ripken ropes 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (A) - Cleveland's Cal Ripken showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against New York (A) on Monday. In 15 years of big league action so far, Cal has compiled a batting average of .249, along with 169 homeruns and 1049 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' With two outs in the 7th inning, Cal drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
