Monday 5/2/1997: Castilla and Bonds win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to California's Vinny Castilla this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .355 with 13 RBI and slugged .935 in 31 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .290, Vinny hit .239 and slugged .533. He has collected 24 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! It's the 6th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's rightfielder Barry Bonds. Barry was on fire, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 19 games. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Sunday 5/1/1997: Bob Wickman (CHA) will miss 6 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s pitcher Bob Wickman was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 6th inning of the game between Chicago (A) and Cleveland. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Wickman will miss about 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Wickman was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Hand. Opposing players hit .310 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 1.80 he went 0-0 in 1 starts, fanning 10 and walking 3 hitters.
Sunday 5/1/1997: Johnson (CHA) and Smoltz (CHA) win monthly pitcher award
Chicago (A)'s Randy D. Johnson had a terrific April, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 44 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 44 innings. His ERA in April was 0.42. Randy D. fired two shutouts! John Smoltz couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 0.61 helped him to a 4-0 record in April. He worked 44 innings, striking out 40 hitters while walking 7. John fired THREE shutouts!
Sunday 5/1/1997: Batter of the Month award winners announced
Minnesota's leftfielder Albert Belle had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Albert went 30 for 89 (.337), while hitting 11 HR and collecting 27 RBI. Barry Bonds of San Francisco wins his 5th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Bonds helped his team with an average of .407 and 32 RBI in 91 at bats.
Friday 4/29/1997: David Justice ropes four hits, completes cycle
DETROIT - David Justice led California to a 11-5 win over Detroit by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A single in the 1st off Jose Lima accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Jose Lima in the 3rd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. In the 5th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Jose Lima. In the 9th inning he belted a RBI double off Dave Pavlas. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! David did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .218. He's now the 89th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 4/10/1997, Brady Anderson was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 4/28/1997: California's Chipper Jones has great day with five hits
DETROIT - Chipper Jones is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Mike Mussina in the 5th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 368 feet from home plate in left-center. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 410 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. He collected singles in the 3rd , in the 7th (two RBIs) and in the 8th inning . Chipper did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 30 hits in 87 at bats, resulting in a .345 batting average. California scored 22 runs on 23 hits.
Thursday 4/28/1997: Chicago (A)'s Ron Coomer slams five hits
CLEVELAND - Chicago (A)'s third baseman Ron Coomer once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Thursday. His 2nd hit, off Garrett Stephenson in the 3rd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 3rd hit was a RBI double off Scott Sullivan in the 4th inning. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a two-run double. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) and in the 9th inning . Ron did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .266 this season, with 3 HR and 17 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 13 runs on 16 hits.
Wednesday 4/27/1997: Minnesota's Burkett severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander John Burkett experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 4th inning of the game against Texas, Burkett complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Torn Ligament Elbow was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Burkett compiled an ERA of 0.88, going 2-0 in 4 starts. He fanned 14 while giving up 17 hits in 30.2 innings.
