Wednesday 6/1/1997: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Chicago (A)'s Wilson Alvarez. His ERA of just 0.84 helped him to a 4-1 record in May. He worked 43 innings, striking out 25 hitters while walking 8. Wilson also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .248 against Wilson this season. While posting an ERA of 1.94 he went 5-1 in 8 starts, fanning 42 and walking 14 hitters. He has one complete game and one shutout. Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Chicago (A)'s John Smoltz. He started 5 games in May, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.63 in 42.2 innings. John fanned 33 hitters. John got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .200 against John this season. The American League's best player of the month was Kansas City's Jose Offerman, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Jose went 42 for 118 (.356), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 33 RBI. Offerman has hit 13 bombs this year while batting .332. He adds 18 doubles, along with 36 runs scored. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 1st in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Miguel Tejada this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Miguel pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .337 with 8 and 38 RBI while slugging .643. Tejada has walked 5 times this year and posts a .366 OBP. While batting .326, 56 for 172, he has driven in 46 runs. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 5th in homeruns!
Monday 5/30/1997: Merullo and Hall win Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's catcher Matt Merullo. He had an on base percentage of .581 and hit .536, while driving in 13 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Merullo has walked 18 times this year and posts a .335 OBP. While batting .273, 50 for 183, he has driven in 34 runs. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Mel Hall this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Mel pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .667 with 0 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .714. He has hit 2 bombs while batting .359 this season. His 65 hits and 8 walks add up to a .396 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the National League in batting!
Sunday 5/29/1997: Baltimore's Matt Merullo ropes six hits
SEATTLE - Matt Merullo saw the ball really well, leading Baltimore to a 21-0 win over Seattle. His six hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Matt seemed happy as well after the game. A double off Todd Burns in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. Number 5 in the 8th inning accounted for a three-run double. His 6th hit was a double off Dave Veres in the 9th inning. He had singles in the 2nd inning (two RBIs) , in the 3rd inning (one RBI) and in the 5th . Matt did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 50 hits this season, accounting for a .273 batting average.
Wednesday 5/25/1997: Cincinnati's Eischen severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's lefty Joey Eischen suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Colorado he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Eischen was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 7 starts this year Joey struck out 26 batters in 40 innings of work. His ERA is 2.25, his record 1-1.
