Tuesday 6/7/1997: Robb Nen fires 1-hitter against Toronto
MINNESOTA - Robb Nen took the mound and never left. And Toronto hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 166 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Nen (8-3) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 78 of 122 pitches for strikes. Minnesota's designated hitter Mo Vaughn got 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. Minnesota improved its record to 40-17, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 6/6/1997: Randy D. Johnson fires 1-hitter against Oakland
OAKLAND - Randy D. Johnson took the mound and never left. And Oakland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s left-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 28 career shutouts in 320 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Johnson (10-2) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 69 of 109 pitches for strikes. Roberto Alomar helped Johnson at the plate, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once. Chicago (A) scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 6/6/1997: Player of the Week honors go to Myers and Rodriguez
Greg Myers wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Greg was on fire, hitting .524 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Greg is hitting .268 this year, with 48 hits in 179 at bats. He has driven in 33 runs, slugging .514. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Ivan Rodriguez, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .583 and hit .545, while driving in 3 runs. Ivan is hitting .381 this year, with 80 hits in 210 at bats. He has driven in 32 runs, slugging .543. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Friday 6/3/1997: Rob Richie out for 6 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s centerfielder Rob Richie will miss about 6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 6th inning of the game between Chicago (A) and Oakland. He dove for a drive off the bat of Gregg Zaun, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Foot. Surgery will be performed next week. Rob has gone 44 for 179 (.246) this season, hitting no longballs and driving in 10 runs. He has scored 21 runs on his own.
