Breaking News Friday, 6/24/1997 Thursday 6/23/1997: Robb Nen quiets Chicago (A) bats with shutout MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (A) on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Bernie F. Williams singled with no outs in the 5th inning. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Nen (9-5) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 66 of 109 pitches for strikes. Minnesota's centerfielder Jim Edmonds went 2 for 3, homering once, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. The final score of the game was 2-0. Wednesday 6/22/1997: Kenny Rogers quiets Los Angeles (N) bats with shutout ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' left-hander Kenny Rogers is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Jay Buhner singled with one out in the 5th inning. Rogers (6-5) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'Things like that happen. Felix Jose helped Rogers at the plate, he got 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling twice, scoring twice with 8 RBI. St. Louis scored 11 runs on 13 hits.
