Thursday 7/14/1997: Bret Boone socks five hits for Colorado
COLORADO - Bret Boone is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A 384 foot drive to left field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Jon Lieber in the 1st inning. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 357 feet, cleared the wall in left field. He had singles in the 3rd , in the 5th and in the 8th inning . Bret did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .296. Colorado improved its record to 29-61, scoring 12 runs on 16 hits.
Tuesday 7/12/1997: Morris Madden pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
SAN DIEGO - St. Louis' left-hander Morris Madden is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Madden 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 8th shutouts in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Tony Fernandez singled with two outs in the 9th inning. Madden (6-8) struck out 9 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Kevin Mitchell helped Madden at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Tuesday 7/12/1997: San Francisco's Williams severely injured
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's third baseman Matt D. Williams will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between San Francisco and Philadelphia. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Williams collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Williams was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Medial Collateral Ligament. This year Williams drove in 58 and scored 56 runs while batting .293 with 17 longballs.
Monday 7/11/1997: Boston's Thome wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Jim Thome this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .500 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.313 in 16 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Kevin Millar this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Kevin went 9 for 18 (.500), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 8 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Millar has walked 19 times this year and posts a .333 OBP. While batting .264, 64 for 242, he has driven in 36 runs.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's season took a blow when Paul Faries suffered a serious injury in the game against Minnesota. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Faries will probaby miss 6 weeks. Faries was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. Faries has walked 37 times this year and posts a .328 OBP. While batting .250, 87 for 348, he has driven in 29 runs.

COLORADO - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Andres Galarraga after his 5 hit game, which Chicago (N) won 11-9 against Colorado. A pitch from Brad Radke in the 3rd inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 379 feet from home plate in left-center. A double off Scott Terry in the 5th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A 429 foot drive to center field marked his 4th hit, a three-run homerun off Graeme Lloyd in the 7th inning. He had singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) and in the 9th . Andres scored 2 runs, and he collected 7 RBI as well! He now has a total of 59 hits this season, accounting for a .223 batting average.
