Friday 7/22/1997: San Francisco's Julio Franco laces 3000th career hit
PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's players had every reason to congratulate Julio Franco, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 3000th career hit! In 16 years of big league action so far, Julio has compiled a batting average of .305, along with 207 homeruns and 1299 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Kirk Rueter. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!

SEATTLE - Randy D. Johnson had some fun again. Seattle hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 30 career shutouts in 328 games started. Johnson (16-4) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 114 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' The hitting star for Chicago (A) was designated hitter Lenny Harris, he got 4 hits in 6 AB, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs and collecting 5 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 64-32, scoring 19 runs on 20 hits.
Tuesday 7/19/1997: St. Louis' Rob Deer laces 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' players had every reason to congratulate Rob Deer, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 7th inning was a single off John Smoltz. Along with his 2000 hits, Rob collected 342 homeruns and 1319 RBI in 15 seasons. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'

Roger Clemens of Boston wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Roger went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 17 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Bret Boone wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Boone helped his team with an average of .444 and 8 RBI in 27 at bats. He has hit 7 homeruns while batting .293 this season. His 98 hits and 20 walks add up to a .337 on-base percentage.

MINNESOTA - Boston's shortstop Howard Johnson joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! He hit a single in the 1st off Robb Nen for number 2000. In 12 years of big league action so far, Howard has compiled a batting average of .294, along with 111 homeruns and 853 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
