Friday 7/29/1997: Jim Edmonds (MIN) will miss 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's Jim Edmonds suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against Oakland. Edmonds fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Knee which will require surgery. While compiling an on base percentage of .392, Jim hit .271 and slugged .511. He has collected 66 runs batted in this year.
Thursday 7/28/1997: New York (A)'s Reynolds out for 7 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Shane Reynolds suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Milwaukee he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Herniated Disc Back. Shane has a record of 8-6 this season, with an ERA of 3.26. In 132.1 Innings he was able to strike out 114 batters. Shane has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
Monday 7/25/1997: Philadelphia's Gonzalez wins Player of the Week award
Jim Thome from Boston wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Jim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .474 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.053. Thome has hit 22 longballs this year while batting .310. He adds 20 doubles, along with 72 runs scored. Philadelphia's leftfielder Luis E. Gonzalez had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Luis E. went 10 for 19 (.526), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 7 RBI.
