Monday 8/8/1997: Montreal's Stairs wins Player of the Week award
Ray Durham wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ray went 12 for 26 (.462), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Durham has hit 12 longballs this year while batting .244. He adds 9 doubles, along with 50 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Matt Stairs, Montreal's starting leftfielder. In 26 at bats he hit .538 with 5 HR and 13 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games.
Saturday 8/6/1997: Kent Bottenfield (CIN) will miss full season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Kent Bottenfield will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against St. Louis on Saturday. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. In 23 starts this year Kent struck out 100 batters in 127 innings of work. His ERA is 5.81, his record 5-11. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Saturday 8/6/1997: Hideo Nomo out for 4 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its right-hander Hideo Nomo for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mike Stanley in a game against Atlanta. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Los Angeles (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Nomo had suffered a Bone Chips Elbow. Opposing players hit .225 against Hideo this season. While posting an ERA of 3.23 he went 12-6 in 24 starts, fanning 162 and walking 80 hitters. He's 6th in the National League in wins!
Thursday 8/4/1997: Jeff Peterek blanks Toronto with a 1-hitter
TORONTO - California's right-hander Jeff Peterek is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Toronto on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 25th time he has done it in his career. Peterek (17-3) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 66 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Todd Hundley provided California with the offense Peterek needed as he got 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, scoring 2 runs with 3 RBI. California scored 6 runs on 8 hits.
Wednesday 8/3/1997: Jamie Moyer shuts out Boston on 2 hits
BOSTON - Detroit's southpaw Jamie Moyer is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Boston found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Moyer 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 19th shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Moyer (11-10) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 74 of 110 pitches for strikes. Eddie Zambrano provided Detroit with the offense Moyer needed as he finished 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs. Detroit improved its record to 59-48, scoring 8 runs on 11 hits.

TORONTO - Great days are rare. But not for Toronto's right-hander Kevin Brown. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. Bruce Aven spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 6th inning. Brown (10-6) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 65 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Jeff Conine helped Brown at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, blasting a homerun, with 4 RBI. Toronto scored 8 runs on 9 hits.
Wednesday 8/3/1997: Texas' Gant severely injured
TEXAS - Texas' second baseman Ron Gant will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Gant was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Foot. His season numbers are: .228 AVG, 85 hits, 16 doubles, 4 triples and 21 longballs, along with 65 RBI and 57 runs scored.

NEW YORK (N) - Pedro Munoz was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cincinnati to a 8-7 win over New York (N) by homering three times. A 383 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st bomb, a two-run homerun off Randy Tomlin in the 3rd inning. It tied the ballgame at 3. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Randy Tomlin. His 3rd blast, a solo homerun off Chad Zerbe in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 397 feet from home plate. Pedro went 3 for 4, scoring three runs and collecting 5 RBI.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Manny Ramirez this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Manny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .522 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .957. Brian McRae from Los Angeles (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Brian was on fire, hitting .522 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Brian has gone 92 for 296 (.311) this season, hitting 13 bombs and driving in 52 runs. He has scored 57 runs on his own.

The best month of July in the American League certainly had Boston's right-hander Roger Clemens, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award.
