Monday 8/15/1997: Morris (BOS) and Jaha (SDG) win P.O.W. award
Boston's first baseman Hal Morris had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .357 and hit .346, while driving in 13 runs. John Jaha from San Diego wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. John pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .889. John is hitting .280 this year, with 108 hits in 386 at bats. He has driven in 68 runs, slugging .495.
Sunday 8/14/1997: Henry A. Rodriguez (BAL) will miss 7 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's players were scared when they had to watch Henry A. Rodriguez suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against California. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Rodriguez will probaby miss 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Dislocated Shoulder which will require surgery. While compiling an on base percentage of .288, Henry A. hit .244 and slugged .555. He has collected 90 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Sunday 8/14/1997: Detroit's Chad Kreuter slams six hits
DETROIT - Detroit's catcher Chad Kreuter accomplished a difficult feat in a 22-2 win over Cleveland, drilling six hits to improve his career batting average to .270! He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 3rd , in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 4th , in the 7th (one RBI) and in the 8th . Chad scored 2 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .308. Detroit improved its record to 66-52, scoring 22 runs on 24 hits.
Friday 8/12/1997: Huge blow for Kansas City's Harris, career over
KANSAS CITY - It was one of baseball saddest days. Kansas City's right-hander Greg W. Harris fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against New York (A) on Friday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Jose Uribe, then suddenly collapsed. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. Greg W. has a record of 10-7 this season, with an ERA of 3.90. In 152.1 Innings he was able to strike out 62 batters. His career featured a record of 93-119 with an ERA of 4.09. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Monday 8/8/1997: Montreal's Stairs wins Player of the Week award
Ray Durham wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ray went 12 for 26 (.462), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Durham has hit 12 longballs this year while batting .244. He adds 9 doubles, along with 50 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Matt Stairs, Montreal's starting leftfielder. In 26 at bats he hit .538 with 5 HR and 13 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games.
