It's the 3rd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to California's pitcher Jeff Peterek. His ERA of just 0.91 helped him to a 5-0 record in August. He worked 39.2 innings, striking out 22 hitters while walking 12. Jeff fired two shutouts! His ERA of 1.88 helped him to a 21-3 record this year. He struck out 121 and walked 64 in 200.2 innings. While batting .331, 172 for 519, he has driven in 111 runs. He's 3rd in the American League in batting and 1st in RBI! Rafael Palmeiro of Montreal wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Rafael went 38 for 99 (.384), while hitting 9 HR and collecting 29 RBI. Palmeiro has hit 34 longballs this year while batting .290. He adds 21 doubles, along with 105 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Tuesday 8/30/1997: Pittsburgh's Rueter severely injured
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's ace Kirk Rueter will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (N) where he left the field in the 7th inning. Rueter was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Rueter compiled an ERA of 2.67, going 19-5 in 30 starts. He fanned 142 while giving up 169 hits in 206 innings. Kirk has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 9th in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Monday 8/29/1997: Greene (CAL) and Bagwell (HOU) win P.O.W. award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to California's third baseman Willie Greene. Willie was on fire, hitting .522 with 3 HR and 14 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Jeff Bagwell this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .476 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.048 in 21 at bats. This year Bagwell drove in 79 and scored 66 runs while batting .233 with 23 homeruns.
Sunday 8/28/1997: Willie Greene nabs five hits against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - California's designated hitter Willie Greene once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Milwaukee's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. A pitch from John H. Doherty in the 1st inning left his bat for a RBI double. Number 4 in the 5th inning accounted for a double. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Troy Percival in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 418 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 2nd inning (one RBI) and in the 4th inning (two RBIs). Willie did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .288. MILWAUKEE - Kevin Tapani took the mound and never left. And Milwaukee hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. BALTIMORE - Mike Williams had some fun again. Baltimore hitters did not. Kansas City's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 119 games started. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Williams (6-11) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 54 of 92 pitches for strikes.
