Monday 9/5/1997: Tim Van Egmond out for 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its right-hander Tim Van Egmond for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Howard Johnson in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Back Muscle which will require surgery. In 0 starts this year Tim struck out 60 batters in 78.1 innings of work. His ERA is 5.63, his record 6-4.
Monday 9/5/1997: Arthur Rhodes quiets Chicago (A) bats with shutout
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's southpaw Arthur Rhodes is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Rhodes (13-13) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 74 of 128 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Baltimore's rightfielder Darryl Brinkley stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, homering once, doubling once, scoring three times with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rhodes. Baltimore scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 9/5/1997: Moyer and Maddux win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jamie Moyer, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Greg Maddux this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Maddux was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.51. Along the way he struck out 12 in 17.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.52 helped him to a 18-5 record this year. He struck out 163 and walked 68 in 248.1 innings. He has 14 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Sunday 9/4/1997: Rex Hudler (SDG) will miss 5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's second baseman Rex Hudler will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 4th inning of the game between San Diego and Colorado. He fielded a ball off the bat of Javy Lopez, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. San Diego wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hudler had suffered a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Hudler has walked 20 times this year and posts a .315 OBP. While batting .276, 116 for 421, he has driven in 52 runs.

DETROIT - Detroit's lefty Jamie Moyer is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Moyer (15-12) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 113 pitches. Delino Deshields helped Moyer at the plate, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, scoring three times. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Thursday 9/1/1997: Texas' Bobby Higginson laces five hits
TEXAS - Bobby Higginson saw the ball really well, leading Texas to a 19-3 win over Milwaukee. His five hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Bobby seemed happy as well after the game. A double off Bobby Munoz in the 3rd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Pedro Astacio in the 5th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 377 feet from home plate in right field. A double off Pedro Astacio in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. His 5th hit, a three-run homerun off Troy Percival in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left field. He collected a single in the 1st, driving in one run. Bobby did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .313.
