Well Braves fans, how much better can it be, with Back 2 Back championships. Way better than losing 3 straight, I'm sure. (Sorry Darryl, your brother made me put that in there)
Smoltz won the Cy Young again, and is that what it takes to win the WS? Both seasons he's won it, the Braves have won it all, versus the 3 times Maddux has won it and they have nothing to show for it in the post season.
The great news for hot 'Lanta is that just about the entire team returns, including Old Man Robinson that has been on the roster for all 4 World Series titles Atlanta has. Does he have enough gas left in him to win 6 more games to hit 300, or is he just gonna waste 6 million in salary this year by not retiring?
The outfield is going to need some replacements soon as Hall is 37, and Dev and Javi aren't spring chickens at 34, with their backup Polonia also 34.
The "kid" Archi Cianfrocco is already 31... wow they grow up so fast. The true youngsters though are Boone and Renteria, and both had decent rookie seasons in 97, and hope to get another ring soon.
The big news in FA was the signing of Jim Abbot, with management hoping they can get the same kind of production out of him that bringing in Glavine has brought. Both are big time lefties that look like they can easily get 15 wins with the Braves. Speaking of Glavine, how about the reversal of fortune since coming to the Braves, just amazing. Had not had a winning season in 3 years prior to coming to the Braves, and then last season set a career high in wins for himself with 19. The strength of the Braves is and has always been the pitching ever since Leo Mazzone was brought in as the Pitching Coach in 77. Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine and Abbot are all 31 or younger, and the team hopes to lean on them for several more pennants. The Elder statesman of the group is Robinson, though him coming back for more than this season seams very suspect, and the new elder statesman will be Mark Gardner that is one of the very few to have pitched a perfect game, coming last June against the Mets.
The East wont be handed to the Braves though, the Expos have had one of the best teams in the NL for the last couple ears, and they look to once again be capable to finally unseat the Atlanta Juggernaut. Should be a fun season to see how the cards play out in this the 42 season of HOFFBL.
See y’all on the baseball diamonds!
