Minnesota's pitcher Scott Garrelts had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Scott went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.25, while fanning 10 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Scott has a record of 4-0 this season, with an ERA of 3.31. In 35.1 Innings he was able to strike out 15 batters. Scott has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 1st in the American League in wins! Fred McGriff from Atlanta wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 22 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
Sunday 4/24/1998: Cincinnati's King severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Eric King for at least 8-9 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mark Gardner in a game against Atlanta. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Bicep Tendon which will require surgery. His ERA of 4.97 helped him to a 0-0 record this year. He struck out 15 and walked 8 in 25.1 innings.
Tuesday 4/19/1998: Xavier Hernandez (CHN) will miss full season
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Xavier Hernandez experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Atlanta, Hernandez complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Ruptured Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Xavier struck out 9 batters in 10.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.48, his record 1-0.
Monday 4/18/1998: Ken Dowell (CIN) will miss 5-6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's shortstop Ken Dowell will miss about 5-6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 2nd inning of the game between Cincinnati and New York (N). He fielded a ball off the bat of Al Chambers, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. Strained Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. He has hit one bomb while batting .226 this season. His 14 hits and 8 walks add up to a .333 on-base percentage.
