After being taken to a local hospital, Coomer was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Ron has gone 28 for 97 (.289) this season, hitting 8 homeruns and driving in 21 runs. He has scored 17 runs on his own.

Ron Coomer from Chicago (A) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Coomer helped his team with an average of .476 and 9 RBI in 21 at bats. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's rightfielder Hal Morris. Hal pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .480 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.120. Hal managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. This year Morris drove in 10 and scored 10 runs while batting .342 with 3 taters.
Sunday 5/1/1998: Garrelts (MIN) and Smiley (SFG) win monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's Scott Garrelts. He started 6 games in April, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 3.16 in 42.2 innings. Scott fanned 17 hitters. Scott also fired a shutout. The best month of April in the National League certainly had San Francisco's lefty John Smiley, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He had an ERA of just 1.00 in 36 innings of work in which he struck out 30 hitters. His record in April is 4-1. John also fired a shutout.
Sunday 5/1/1998: Red hot Oliver and Martinez win Batter of the Month award
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Toronto's Joe Oliver this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .356 with 33 RBI and slugged .805 in 87 at bats. The National League's best player of the month was Cincinnati's Edgar Martinez, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .444 with 28 RBI and slugged .687 in 99 at bats.
Friday 4/29/1998: Tom Glavine shuts out Milwaukee on 2 hits
MILWAUKEE - Atlanta's lefty Tom Glavine is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Glavine 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 7th shutouts in his career. Glavine (3-1) struck out 4 and walked 4, throwing 63 of 109 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Atlanta's second baseman Aaron Boone got 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Glavine. Atlanta scored 5 runs on 10 hits.
Thursday 4/28/1998: Milwaukee's Walbeck severely injured
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's season took a blow when Matt Walbeck suffered a serious injury in the game against San Francisco. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Walbeck will probaby miss 5 weeks. Milwaukee wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Walbeck had suffered a Fractured Ulna. Walbeck has walked 12 times this year and posts a .427 OBP. While batting .338, 26 for 77, he has driven in 6 runs.
Wednesday 4/27/1998: Mike Poehl fires 1-hitter against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Mike Poehl had some fun again. Chicago (N) hitters did not. Montreal's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 223 games started. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Jose R. Herrera singled with no outs in the 7th inning. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Poehl (2-0) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 70 of 111 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Montreal was third baseman Matt Stairs, he went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. Montreal scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
Wednesday 4/27/1998: Barry Bonds has 2000th career hits
MILWAUKEE - San Francisco's Barry Bonds showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Milwaukee on Wednesday. His hit in the 8th inning was a double off Troy Percival. In 11 years of big league action so far, Barry has compiled a batting average of .307, along with 322 homeruns and 1147 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'

TEXAS - Texas' lefty Chris Nabholz will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Chicago (A) on Wednesday. Nabholz was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 5 starts this year Chris struck out 17 batters in 33.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.70, his record 2-1. Chris has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
