Monday 5/9/1998: Player of the Week honors go to Williams and Williams
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams. Williams helped his team with an average of .385 and 11 RBI in 26 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Matt D. Williams this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Matt D. pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .367 with 6 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.100. Matt D. managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 6 consecutive games as well!
Friday 5/6/1998: Masato Yoshii pitches his 1st shutout of the season
OAKLAND - Masato Yoshii took the mound and never left. And Boston hitters couldn't touch him at all. Oakland's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 78 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Yoshii (3-2) fanned 2 and walked none, throwing 78 pitches. Brady Anderson provided Oakland with the offense Yoshii needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, doubling once, with 2 RBI. Oakland scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
Friday 5/6/1998: Kenny Rogers fires 2-hitter against Baltimore
CALIFORNIA - California's southpaw Kenny Rogers is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Rogers (4-1) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 106 pitches. California's designated hitter Willie Greene stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rogers. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Thursday 5/5/1998: Toronto's Fisher out for 8 weeks
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Brian Fisher will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Fisher compiled an ERA of 5.05, going 2-2 in 6 starts. He fanned 13 while giving up 46 hits in 35.2 innings.
Wednesday 5/4/1998: Rondell White on fire, laces five hits
COLORADO - Montreal's centerfielder Rondell White accomplished a difficult feat in a 8-3 win over Colorado, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .301! A 427 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Brad Radke in the 1st inning. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Graeme Lloyd in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He had singles in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Rondell did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 36 hits in 113 at bats, resulting in a .319 batting average. The final score of the game was 8-3.
Tuesday 5/3/1998: Roberto Alomar clubs six hits in a game
OAKLAND - Chicago (A)'s second baseman Roberto Alomar once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Tuesday. A double off Bryan Hickerson in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Bryan Hickerson in the 2nd inning left his bat for a double. His 3rd hit was a double off Bryan Hickerson in the 5th inning. He had singles in the 6th inning (two RBIs) , in the 8th and in the 9th . Roberto did drive in 2 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .330. The final score of the game was 14-7.
