The creating of the 1998 Pirates. GM Stooolfan had a long road to put together this squad.
The first step. Was the great teardown. Stooolfan upset other GM’s in the league, but it was necessary to starting over.
The first Trade.
Boston Sends:
CL LaTroy Hawkins
CL Jason Isringhausen
CF Moises Alou
SP Dave Swartzbaugh
BOS 1st next draft
BOS 2nd this draft
Pittsburgh Sends:
LF Greg Vaughn
C Mike Stanley
1B Tom Brunansky
LF Henry Rodriguez
MR Brian Meyer
SP Ralph Citarella
SP Mike Paxton
This allowed Stoolfan the flexibility to start over and start acquiring assets. This trade paved way for Pitt to have an elite Pen with Hawkins and Isringhausen in the setup and closer positions.
Gm of Toronto was upset commenting : You just gave him a whole-ass big league roster so I don’t know how it would be. Give it a couple years and Pitt will have the best bullpen a 100-loss team ever saw.
Sea gave insight into the trade commenting: honestly i see why he had to convince you. I think you might have moved too quickly. Especially salary wise. Good for stool for moving everyone so he can go for the #1 pick. Unfortunately it seems like half the teams in this league dont want to win so for a team to rebuild they have to give their players away.
The next big move was a Trade between Tex and Pitt.
Texas Sends:
3B Jason Giambi
P Dan Petry
1997 Round 3 Ammy
Pittsburg Sends:
1998 Round
1997 Round 2
P Felix Rodriguez
Junior Spivey
P Brian Tollberg
This trade allowed Stooolfan to acquire a big MLB Bat for peanuts and a salary dump. Stooolfan cut Petry and found an All-star in Giambi whos MLB clock was still at zero. Big move for Stooolfan.
Quickly after acquiring Giambi. Stooolfan reached out to Spencer of the Giants who was in need of cash.
SF Sends:
Ray Lankford, Centerfield
Pit Sends:
15 mil cash
Kevin Millar, Third Base
Joe Mays, Starting Pitcher
This trade allowed Stooolfan to acquire an All-star all around player in Lankford on a really good contract for Cash and a flyer in Kevin Millar.
With all this offense Pittsburg needed some pitching. Surprisingly the Ace in Rueter and Pen arm in King was found in the Division with Cincinnati.
Pitt Sends:
Kirk "Woody" Rueter
Ray "Burger" King
Pete Harnisch, Reliever, 30 yrs
Cin Sends:
Carlos Beltran
1st Round pick
This allowed Stooolfan to get the Ace of the team. In FA Stooolfan acquired two all-stars in Kiyo and Todd and the window to win was now. Beltran was a tough loss but, was necessary to get a dominate Arm.
Still Looking for Pitching Stooolfan reached out to Tor and was able to acquire a former Pirate to fill the void. A simple deal who sent a flyer for a solid pitcher.
Pitt sends
P Ramos
Tor sends
P Eave.
Stooolfan still in search of a dominate arm again was able to get an Ace out of a division rival in Cin.
To PIT: SP- Paul Wagner
To CIN- LF- Alfonso Soriano and 50 points
A tough loss in Soriano but, was well worth grabbing another ACE under the age of 30.
Stooolfan then turned to CHC and quired and elite defensive 2B.
Pitt Sends:
1st Round
Erick Almonte, Shortstop, 19 yrs (scrub)
CHC Sends:
John Valentin, Shortstop, 30 yrs
This trade was solid for getting a solid MLB player on a good contract.
At this point Stooolfan, needed cash to bolster the lineup and agreed to terms with SEA.
Sea Sends:
CL Akinori Otsuka
20 mil game cash
Pit Sends:
1b Paul Konerko
This trade was essential for the cash flow of Pitt. It allowed more flexibility and added another elite RP for a player who was extra and underdeveloped.
GM from Tor made another comment : Talk as much trash about stool as you want, but that team's starting to look scary.
Stooolfans team was starting to round out. Stoool was able to acquire Dwight Gooden from BOS and finalize his rotation. Acquire Brad Holman from the Braves to bolster his elite Pen. Pull some razzle dazzle get HOJO and dump HOJO and acquire Velarde , Richie.
After all the dealing. Pittsburg sits at 23-11 in 1st place. Payroll 79 mil and a scary team.
LF Lankford
SS Garciaparra
RF Giambi
3B Kiyo
C Pratt
CF Richie
1B Sexson
2B Valentin
UTILTY Velarde
SP 1- Wagner
SP 2- Rueter
SP 3- Gooden
SP-4 Eave
MR1- King
MR2- Holman
MR3- Manzanillo
MR4- Otsuka
SU- Hawkins
