ST. LOUIS - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Houston's second baseman Craig Biggio accomplished that feat in a 15-7 win over St. Louis. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 392 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. A 398 foot drive to right field marked his 2nd bomb, a GRAND SLAM off Vaughn Eshelman in the 5th inning. His 3rd shot, off Ron Mahay in the 9th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Overall he finished 4 for 5, scoring FOUR runs and collecting 10 RBI. His homerun total this year is 8, along with 35 RBI. On 4/10/1998, Edgar Martinez was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Monday 5/16/1998: St. Louis' Meyer out for full season
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Brian Meyer will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Houston on Monday. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Ligament Elbow. Opposing players hit .293 against Brian this season. While posting an ERA of 4.05 he went 0-1 in 0 starts, fanning 29 and walking 11 hitters.
Monday 5/16/1998: Fred McGriff nabs five hits against Arizona
ARIZONA - On Monday, Atlanta's first baseman Fred McGriff displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Arizona, punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 1st hit was a RBI double off Frank Castillo in the 1st inning. A 386 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Frank Castillo in the 3rd inning. Number 3 in the 5th inning accounted for a double. He collected singles in the 7th inning and in the 8th (one RBI). Fred did drive in 3 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 43 hits in 141 at bats, resulting in a .305 batting average. The final score of the game was 13-1.
Monday 5/16/1998: Robb Nen turns in great performance against Tampa Bay
MINNESOTA - Robb Nen took the mound and never left. And Tampa Bay hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 195 games started. Nen (5-4) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 66 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' The hitting star for Minnesota was centerfielder Jim Edmonds, he went 2 for 4, doubling once. Minnesota scored 4 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 5/16/1998: Williams and Williams win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Williams, one of Kansas City's best starting pitchers. Mike went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.62, while fanning 10 in 16.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 3.86 helped him to a 5-2 record this year. He struck out 40 and walked 18 in 53.2 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. He's 7th in the American League in wins! Matt D. Williams from San Francisco wins his 6th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Williams helped his team with an average of .429 and 6 RBI in 21 at bats.
Sunday 5/15/1998: Philadelphia's Hunter severely injured
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's players were scared when they had to watch Torii Hunter suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Milwaukee. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Hunter will probaby miss 11 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Wrist. Torii has gone 39 for 158 (.247) this season, hitting one homerun and driving in 11 runs. He has scored 16 runs on his own.
Saturday 5/14/1998: Edgardo Alfonzo ropes four hits, completes cycle
SAN FRANCISCO - New York (N)'s second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up San Francisco's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. His 1st hit, a three-run homerun off John Smiley in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 472 feet from home plate. A single in the 6th off Ricardo Rincon accounted for his 2nd hit. A RBI double off John Burkett in the 7th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit was a triple off Mike Stanton in the 9th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Edgardo scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 44 hits in 125 at bats, resulting in a .352 batting average. He's now the 91st player in league history to hit for the cycle! Jim Thome was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/5/1998.
Friday 5/13/1998: Will Clark collects 2000th hit against New York (N)
SAN FRANCISCO - Will Clark got a standing ovation from 64998 fans in San Francisco, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Will collected 281 homeruns and 1045 RBI in 11 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' His hit in the 3rd inning was a three run homerun off Randy Tomlin.
Friday 5/13/1998: Jim Abbott (ATL) will miss 5 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's lefty Jim Abbott suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Los Angeles (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Abbott was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Elbow Ligament. This season Abbott compiled an ERA of 2.26, going 6-0 in 8 starts. He fanned 28 while giving up 45 hits in 59.2 innings. He's 5th in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
