Wednesday 6/1/1998: Toronto's Clemens earns Pitcher of the Month award
Roger Clemens pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 31 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 3-1 while pitching 31 innings. His ERA in May was 0.96. Roger pitched a shutout as well. This season Clemens compiled an ERA of 1.53, going 7-2 in 11 starts. He fanned 66 while giving up 65 hits in 88 innings. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! Hideo Nomo couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. It's the 3rd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to California's leftfielder Ken Griffey Jr.. Griffey Jr. helped his team with an average of .368 and 34 RBI in 95 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .461, Ken hit .321 and slugged .761. He has collected 50 runs batted in this year. He's 4th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Tuesday 5/31/1998: John Smoltz pitches 1-hit shutout against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (N) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 46th time he has done it in his career. Smoltz (8-3) struck out 9 and issued 4 BB, throwing 74 of 125 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' The hitting star for Atlanta was centerfielder Mike Devereaux, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, stroking a double, with 2 RBI. Atlanta scored 3 runs on 3 hits.
Monday 5/30/1998: Hector Fajardo out for 5 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Hector Fajardo for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Billy Masse in a game against Chicago (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Hector has a record of 3-5 this season, with an ERA of 6.50. In 63.2 Innings he was able to strike out 55 batters.
Monday 5/30/1998: Rodriguez (CHA) and Garciaparra (PIT) win P.O.W. award
Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Henry A. Rodriguez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Rodriguez helped his team with an average of .389 and 12 RBI in 18 at bats. His season features a batting average of .291 (53 hits in 182 AB), 11 doubles, no triples and 12 homeruns. Rodriguez collected 46 RBI and 35 runs as well. Pittsburgh's shortstop Nomar Garciaparra had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. BOSTON - Darryl Hamilton is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. He had singles in the 2nd , in the 2nd inning , in the 6th , in the 7th inning (one RBI) , in the 8th and in the 8th (one RBI). Darryl scored 4 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Cory Lidle in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 347 feet from home plate. His 3rd shot, a three-run homerun off Milt Hill in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. Overall he got 4 hits in 5 AB, scoring FOUR times with 7 RBI.
