KANSAS CITY - Boston's players had every reason to congratulate Mike A. Marshall, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! He hit a single in the 7th off Brad Holman for number 2000. In 15 years of big league action so far, Mike A. has compiled a batting average of .261, along with 286 homeruns and 1180 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
Monday 6/6/1998: San Diego's Giles wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Frank E. Thomas, Chicago (A)'s starting first baseman. He hit .423 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.231 in 26 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now. Frank E. is hitting .340 this year, with 72 hits in 212 at bats. He has driven in 61 runs, slugging .712. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Brian S. Giles this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .480 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 25 at bats.
Saturday 6/4/1998: Paul McClellan turns in great performance against Seattle
MINNESOTA - Paul McClellan had some fun again. Seattle hitters did not. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 189 games started. McClellan (8-3) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 69 of 122 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Minnesota's shortstop Russ Davis finished 2 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of McClellan. Minnesota improved its record to 33-24, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.
Thursday 6/2/1998: Steve Shields earns 300th career win
TAMPA BAY - Tampa Bay's right-hander Steve Shields gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Steve Shields threw 131 pitches in 9 innings, 83 for strikes. He allowed 0 earned runs while striking out 2 and walking 0 earned runs. His career features a 2.59 ERA, along with 3863 K's in 4026 innings. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' He has won 20 games 7 times in his career, setting a career high with 27 wins in 1993. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
