BOSTON - Frank E. Thomas is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a RBI double. His 2nd hit, off Jose J. Bautista in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. Number 5 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 324 feet, cleared the wall in right field. He collected singles in the 6th (one RBI) and in the 7th . Frank E. did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 84 hits in 243 at bats, resulting in a .346 batting average. BOSTON - Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Henry A. Rodriguez showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 22-3 win over Boston. He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in three homeruns. His 1st shot, a three-run homerun off Adam C. Peterson in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. A 363 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Jose J. Bautista in the 4th inning. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 392 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. Henry A. got 4 hits in 6 AB, doubling once, scoring FOUR runs and driving in 7 runs. In 3176 career at bats, he has hit 149 homeruns and collected 531 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 42-26, scoring 22 runs on 28 hits.
Monday 6/13/1998: Gary Sheffield out for 8 weeks
TORONTO - Toronto's third baseman Gary Sheffield will miss at least 8 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Torn Calf Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .381, Gary hit .237 and slugged .526. He has collected 44 runs batted in this year.

The American League's best player of the week was California's Kenny Rogers, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Rogers was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! The National League's best player of the week was Atlanta's Mike Stanley, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career.
