Wednesday 6/22/1998: Boston's Martinez severely injured
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's right-hander Ramon J. Martinez will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against California where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Boston wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Martinez had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 6.14 helped him to a 2-8 record this year. He struck out 38 and walked 28 in 96.2 innings.
Tuesday 6/21/1998: Shawn Green stars with cycle against Arizona
ARIZONA - Shawn Green led Cincinnati to a 10-0 win over Arizona by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a RBI double. A 408 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Mike R. Jackson in the 3rd inning. A single in the 5th off Steve Karsay accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Bryan Ward in the 8th inning left his bat for a triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Shawn did drive in 3 while scoring one run on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .301. He's now the 92nd player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 5/14/1998, Edgardo Alfonzo was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Monday 6/20/1998: Rodriguez (CHA) and Puckett (FLA) win P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Henry A. Rodriguez this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Henry A. pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .423 with 4 HR and 15 RBI while slugging .962. Kirby Puckett wins his 9th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Kirby was on fire, hitting .440 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Sunday 6/19/1998: Kevin Brown quiets Seattle bats with shutout
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Kevin Brown is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Seattle found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Brown 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 29th shutouts in his career. Brown (9-5) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 60 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Mike C. Brown helped Brown at the plate, he went 3 for 4, homering once, hitting a double, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. Toronto improved its record to 42-29, scoring 8 runs on 10 hits.
