The Los Angeles Dodgers trying to prove in a league fill of "tankers" that there is more than one way to skin a cat, err.. run an organization.
Just before the start of the 1991 season the LA Dodgers decided to bring in fresh blood into their GM offices. The newly hired Jmich24 had a fresh staff, an eye for starting pitching and a reluctance to re-signing aging players to long term deals, this would be a story line for the next 10 years. "For good or bad I have my philosophies. I will try to adapt and learn from my mistakes, but this is who I am." Jmich24 was once quoted in the LA Times.
That new philosophy lead to the dealings of Dan Petre, Steve Shields, Jamie Moyer, Mark Eichhorn, Fred McGriff, Sid Fernandez just to name a few. A keen eye for Starting pitching has brought this once dynamic staff full circle over a 9 year period. The Dodgers have are tied for third in runs allowed midway through the 1998 season
While rebuilding on the fly the dodgers made three playoff appearances, won one playoff series and took the MIGHTY Giants to a game seven. The Dodgers ability to still compete while rebuilding has led to the Dodgers to maintain a 80-90 million dollar payroll as well as keep fan interest high throughout his tenure.
In a recent interview with Dodgers GM Jmich24 he was brutally honest when talking about how this approach works for the Dodger Organization.
"We respect the Giants and what they were able to accomplish over the past nine years. We saw early on the relationships Spencer has in the league. We think that may have helped him to keep his run going longer than we ever anticipated, a credit to him."
"At one point we dealt Steve Shields to the rival in hopes of derailing their longevity. What a mistake in hindsight. Little did we know, Shields would continue his dominance even after his successful run in San Fran at the age of 39 years old."
"We are proud of what we have done in the league thus far. We didn't sacrifice our morals and keep our fan base interested, even though we still haven't made it over the proverbial hump just yet"
"As we enter the 1998 season we could see the mighty Giants organization starting to crack a little bit." The farm system was depleted, stars were aging and there seemed to be a little less room for them to maintain an inflated Payroll."
"With a top ten farm system and a pretty solid core of Pitching and Hitting we decided to pull the trigger on a trade for Jim Thome. What we like best about Jim is is agility to do it all. A team guy! Jim was very open to spending the spring improving his ability to play 3rd base to amplify our lineup. Signing a 5 year deal to stay with the Dodgers was huge. At only 27 years old we thing the sky is the limit for Big Jim."
"After the trading for Thome we looked to the free agent market; Billy Taylor(7-3 3.51 ERA) and Phil Plantier (.259 19 HRs 69 RBIs) were great additions that fit into the clubhouse."
"As an outsider in a league full of bro's, my decision making has been questioned. The assistant to the reginal manager(Brian) once scoffed at my use of the 20 million for 2 year contract extension." Brian said "nuclear wasn't the play, but signed". Implying I should have given Jay Buhner a 5 year deal at $15 million instead of the $20 for 2. It is my opinion, having Buhner signed for three more season at $15 million really hinders my roster flexibility, but just like my "genius" idea of dealing Shields to San Fran, time will tell.
"Is this the year for the Dodgers? Man, I'm not going that far, we have plenty of PTSD in the organization over the ass-whoppings we have taken at the hands of the Giants over the past decade"
"Would we be in a better position if we would have tanked hard as soon as i walked through that door? Quite possibly, but I'm proud of our guys and the way we have done it. Every season since we got here we won at least 89 games, couple years we won 100!"
"As of today we have the best record in the NL and still have a top 10 minor league organization."
"Even if 1998 isn't our year, we believe the future is as bright as even in Los Angeles."
