FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Roy Halladay suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against St. Louis he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Halladay was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. This season Halladay compiled an ERA of 3.84, going 8-2 in 15 starts. He fanned 48 while giving up 104 hits in 96 innings.
Tuesday 7/19/1998: Mike Stanley clubs three rockets
ATLANTA - Atlanta's catcher Mike Stanley flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 9-2 win over Colorado. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 470 feet, cleared the wall in center field. The game was tied, 1-1, after the blast. A 383 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Brad Radke in the 4th inning. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Brad Radke in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in right field. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with FOUR runs scored with 4 RBI. On 7/18/1998, Rob Nelson was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. The final score of the game was 9-2.

ATLANTA - John Smoltz had some fun again. Colorado hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 48 career shutouts in 390 games started. Toronto's designated hitter Rob Nelson accomplished that feat in a 15-0 win over Seattle. A 447 foot drive to center field marked his 1st bomb, a two-run homerun off Bartolo Colon in the 1st inning. A pitch from Todd Burns in the 4th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 448 feet from home plate in right field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Esteban Loaiza. Overall he got 4 hits in 6 AB, scoring three runs and driving in 6 runs. On 7/15/1998, Robin Ventura was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. Toronto improved its record to 57-37, scoring 15 runs on 15 hits.

A pitch from Julio Mateo in the 5th inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 348 feet from home plate in right field.
