Monday 7/25/1998: Nelson and Giambi win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Toronto's Rob Nelson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Nelson helped his team with an average of .519 and 17 RBI in 27 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. Jason Giambi wins his 1st Player of the Week award. Sunday 7/24/1998: Mike York pitches 1-hit shutout against Houston
COLORADO - Colorado's right-hander Mike York is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Houston found out the hard way, getting just one hit. York 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' York (6-8) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 3, throwing 118 pitches. Tim Naehring provided Colorado with the offense York needed as he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. Colorado improved its record to 45-53, scoring 16 runs on 14 hits.
Sunday 7/24/1998: It's NO-NO time for Ron Robinson against Seattle
DETROIT - Ron Robinson had some fun again. REAL fun. Seattle hitters did not. Detroit's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 22 career shutouts in 430 games started. Robinson (6-3) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 71 of 108 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Detroit's leftfielder Albert Belle got 4 hits in 6 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring three times and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Robinson. Detroit scored 17 runs on 19 hits.
Friday 7/22/1998: Philadelphia's Osuna out for 5 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's lefty Al Osuna will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Milwaukee where he left the field in the 9th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Al has a record of 1-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.55. In 42.1 Innings he was able to strike out 32 batters.
Friday 7/22/1998: Jeff Cirillo out for 4-5 weeks
