Friday 8/5/1998: Kenny Rogers pitches his 5th shutout of the season
SEATTLE - California's lefty Kenny Rogers is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just one hit. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Rogers (18-2) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 113 pitches for strikes. California's centerfielder Tim Salmon got 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rogers. California scored 7 runs on 14 hits.
Thursday 8/4/1998: Houston's Biggio severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, second baseman Craig Biggio, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Biggio was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Posterior Cruciate Ligament. His season features a batting average of .284 (99 hits in 348 AB), 23 doubles, 6 triples and 19 homeruns. Biggio collected 78 RBI and 72 runs as well.

SEATTLE - Danny Jackson took the mound and never left. And Seattle hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He will miss probably 6-7 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His season features a batting average of .223 (74 hits in 332 AB), 17 doubles, one triple and 10 longballs. Myers collected 36 RBI and 42 runs as well.
